MRes Advanced Biological Science, University of Southampton

Graduated with Distinction and winner of the 2017 Faculty Merit Award.

Supervised by Dr Jake Snaddon and Dr Kelvin Peh of the University of Southampton we aimed to appraise the provision of Cultural Ecosystem Services (CES) within Riverside Park, Southampton. As an important local, urban greenspace, incorporating the River Itchen, an iconic chalk stream, we quantified CES provision using Dr. Peh’s TESSA rapid-assessment framework. Incorporating PPGIS and other inductive techniques we investigated the extent and location of current stakeholder appreciation for the park to compare to a hypothetical alternative state, to assess potential changes in important CES provision given the new scenario to be used for future policy and planning.

Publication in People and Nature.

As an additional mini-project I also co-wrote a book chapter for Grasslands and Climate Change now published. Read this blog post for more information.

Ecological Research Internship on Pollinators and Environmental Stewardship Schemes

Research internship investigating the success of farmland management options for bumblebees, a species of conservation concern with focus on Agricultural Stewardship Schemes. The project required field survey over the summer months followed by an analysis of the habitat and species data gathered in order to produce a report for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and the School of Biological Sciences.

Our work contributed towards a long-term monitoring of bumblebee species and habitats, and therefore analysis was used to inform further successful conservation management.
